Introduction

Located in the western part of the state, Boise City, OK, is a small city with a rich history and unique features that make it a must-visit destination. Founded in 1908, the city was named after French-Canadian trapper René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle's guide, Louis Boise. The city is the county seat of Cimarron County and is the only city in Oklahoma that is located in the Mountain Time Zone.

History of Boise City

Boise City has a fascinating history that dates back to the early 1900s. The city was founded in 1908 as a stop on the Santa Fe Railroad. During the Dust Bowl era of the 1930s, many farmers and ranchers migrated to the area in search of fertile land. Unfortunately, the land was not suitable for farming, and many of the settlers struggled to survive. In 1935, a group of locals, led by a man named George W. Johnson, hatched a plan to create rain by exploding dynamite in the sky. Although the plan failed to produce rain, it did attract national attention to the area. During World War II, the city was home to a prisoner-of-war camp that housed German prisoners. The camp was located just north of the city and employed many local residents. After the war, the camp was dismantled, and the land was returned to its original owners.
